The Ten Commandments

The answer to the question, "Why do we have the Ten Commandments?" is not to imply that God wishes to interrupt our otherwise peaceful, happy, just and fruitful lives with arbitrary commandments in order to make life difficult. God knows, as expressions of his wisdom, that the commandments can help us in the midst of our own weakness and the failings of those around us to achieve our full human potential in a world not fully supportive of human life, freedom and responsibility.
